Sixteen-year-old Tim Cranmer belongs to a family of time-traveling historians. He lives in Albany, NY (1689), but most of his life has been spent 'shifting' through time witnessing and learning about important historical events. Like the rest of his family, he is expected to become a historian himself. But everything changes when he learns their time travel technology has somehow disrupted a magical barrier allowing an army of shape-shifting creatures called Tortured Ones to invade our world. As if that weren't enough, Tim's meddlesome, twelve-year-old brother Jimmy has turned hero and disappeared without a trace. Now Tim must find Jimmy and somehow convince him to return home before he causes any more trouble. It seems Jimmy's gone after their uncle Josiah who, as Tim learns, has teamed up with the invaders. But when Tim discovers how to really save the world he is faced with a dilemma: should he save it or should he try to prevent Jimmy from 'saving' it?
